Katherine Copeland

Everyone deserves a fierce advocate in their corner when they face a traumatic life experience. For Katherine, becoming that advocate meant leaving a successful 20-year career as a mechanical engineer to pursue her passion for the law.

Today, Katherine combines her technical expertise and legal training as an attorney focused on personal liability, complex civil matters and appellate advocacy. She thrives on challenging cases that demand analytical problem-solving and creative thinking. Her unique background translates into a meticulous eye for detail, clear and effective communication, and an unwavering commitment to securing the best possible outcomes for her clients.

Katherine earned her law degree summa cum laude from North Carolina Central University School of Law, attending the evening program while working full-time as an engineer. During law school, she served on the Moot Court Board and was named Best Oral Advocate at the William McGee National Civil Rights Moot Court Competition. She also interned with Judge Wanda Bryant at the North Carolina Court of Appeals and was awarded the Floyd B. Missick Award for Leadership and Scholarship. She holds an undergraduate degree in Architectural Engineering from Pennsylvania State University.

After graduating, Katherine clerked for nearly three years with Justice Allison Riggs at both the North Carolina Supreme Court and the Court of Appeals, where she gained deep experience in appellate procedure and worked on high-impact cases affecting residents across the state.

Before entering the legal field, Katherine managed large-scale healthcare and pharmaceutical projects as a mechanical engineer. Her work included high-profile projects such as the Cleveland Clinic Taussig Cancer Center, The Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters, Biogen-IDEC, and multiple projects for Merck & Co.

In addition to her legal practice, Katherine serves as a torts professor at NCCU School of Law. She brings real-world insight to the classroom by turning current appellate cases into engaging hypotheticals and coaching moot court teams on oral advocacy and legal writing.

Personal Life

Outside the work, Katherine enjoys running, traveling with her daughter, Nicole, and taking walks with her rescue dog, Dutch.
